The Cubs lost both games of Friday's split doubleheader at Fenway Park, but the two results came by different routes. Chicago led 3-0 early in the opener and lost 4-3 after Boston's comeback. The nightcap stayed scoreless through seven innings before Wilyer Abreu's two-run double made it a 2-0 Red Sox win. These were separate completed games, each with its own box score and recap.
Friday's two game reports
- Game 1: Cubs let a three-run lead slip in a 4-3 loss. Miguel Amaya doubled home two in the second, but Boston tied the score in the fifth and Connor Wong's seventh-inning double put the Red Sox ahead.
- Game 2: Cubs blanked 2-0 in the nightcap. David Peterson threw five scoreless innings for Chicago; Abreu's two-out double in the eighth supplied the game's only runs.
In the opener, the Cubs scored in each of the first two innings. Their lead disappeared as Roman Anthony scored three times and Adley Rutschman drove in two. Chicago's pitchers kept the game close, but the offense did not score again after Amaya's double. Boston's bullpen held the line long enough for Wong's decisive hit.
The nightcap was lower scoring throughout. Chicago had seven hits, including two each from Seiya Suzuki, Michael Busch and Nico Hoerner, but left six runners on base and grounded into two double plays. Boston had only four hits and likewise left six runners on base, yet Abreu converted its eighth-inning opportunity. Brayan Bello and Jedixson Paez combined for the shutout.
