The Celtics have agreed to bring Devin Carter to training camp, adding a former Providence lottery pick to a point-guard group that includes Derrick White, Payton Pritchard and Mike Conley. Carter will compete for a standard roster spot or a two-way contract, according to NBC Sports.
Carter averaged 8.9 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.7 assists in 18.4 minutes over 38 games for Sacramento last season. He shot 27.4 percent from three across his first two NBA seasons, a number that will matter on a Boston team built around spacing and high-volume three-point attempts.
Carter has played 74 games in two seasons and dealt with shoulder, ankle, calf and back injuries. Availability will be part of the evaluation alongside his shooting and defense. Boston has an open 15th roster spot, but limited room beneath the tax makes a two-way path a useful option if Carter does not win a standard contract immediately.

The Providence connection gives the move local interest. The roster decision will come down to basketball details: whether Carter can stay on the floor, defend at the point of attack and punish teams that leave him open. Boston already has established guards, so his route to minutes requires a clear skill that helps the second unit.
Carter's camp role is therefore a practical roster test. If his shot remains unreliable, the Celtics may value his defensive activity and ball pressure enough to keep him in the organization through a two-way deal. If he shows reliable catch-and-shoot range and handles the physical demands of camp, he can compete for the open standard spot.
Training camp will settle the question. The agreement creates an evaluation opportunity, not a guaranteed rotation role, and the Celtics have not announced a final place for Carter on the opening roster.
