Boston's September bench deserves a closer look
Analysis: late-game coverage can change the value of a roster spot.

Boston activated Isiah Kiner-Falefa and promoted Jedixson Paez on September 1. MLB report.
Think through the seventh inning
A roster announcement is easier to understand when you imagine a close game already in progress. Who could replace a defender? Who could run? Which move would leave the manager short at another position if the game continued?
For Boston fans, that exercise offers a practical way to evaluate the bench. Counting hitters is less useful than asking how the available players cover the field after a substitution. One apparent upgrade can force another change an inning later.

Our analysis would start with the likely cost of the next plate appearance. A defensive move may protect a lead while reducing the chance of adding to it. Leaving the original lineup intact preserves offense but can pass up an opportunity to improve coverage. The score, batting order and remaining innings should all enter the decision.
Try writing down the choice before the manager makes it. Then judge the reasoning separately from whether a ball happens to find a glove. A sound decision can have an unlucky result.
The same habit makes roster news more interesting throughout September: ask which situation the new option helps solve, rather than assuming every addition must become an everyday starter.
Kiner-Falefa explained the job in February
The Red Sox's introductory media session with Kiner-Falefa is useful context for this discussion. In February, he described embracing a utility assignment, including coming off the bench and entering for defense. He explained that playing different positions was a role he wanted to do well, rather than an inconvenience he hoped to escape.
He also discussed preparation. When expecting to come off the bench, he described working at shortstop as a base from which to move elsewhere. When assigned a position for a particular day, he emphasized concentrating on that job. These are his preseason comments, not an announcement of a fixed September role.
That perspective helps explain why a bench evaluation should include readiness. A player may have only one chance to handle a difficult ball or take a consequential at-bat. His work before that moment is largely invisible during the broadcast.
Our next-game exercise would be to identify the possible substitution before the inning begins. Check who would cover each position afterward and where the substitute would bat if the game continued. If the move solves one problem while creating another, say so. The roster's flexibility becomes much easier to discuss once the whole arrangement is on the page, rather than only the name entering the game.
