The Cowboys activated Tyler Smith from injured reserve Thursday afternoon and confirmed that the All-Pro left guard would suit up against Tampa Bay. His return follows four missed games and surgery on the thumb he injured in training camp. Dallas waived running back Emari Demercado to make room on its active roster. The October 8 game at AT&T Stadium is scheduled for 8:15 p.m. Eastern.
Smith’s 21-day return-to-practice window opened Monday, and he reached full participation Wednesday after two limited reports. Dallas said Smith had received medical clearance and was given the opportunity to decide whether his thumb felt comfortable enough to play. Thursday’s official activation and the team’s statement that he will suit up resolve the earlier uncertainty about his return. His presence restores an experienced blocker in front of Dak Prescott and Javonte Williams after T.J. Bass filled the position during his absence.
Dallas’ late inactive report brought a separate setback: Joey Porter Jr. was ruled out because of an illness. Cobie Durant, DeMarvion Overshown and Drew Shelton are also inactive with hamstring injuries. The Cowboys elevated defensive backs Reddy Steward and Juanyeh Thomas Thursday afternoon, while Tampa Bay will play without Baker Mayfield, Antoine Winfield Jr., Benjamin Morrison and SirVocea Dennis. Smith’s return strengthens the offensive line as Dallas adjusts its defensive personnel for the short-week game.
