Bears rebuild roster depth after Bryant and Large go on injured reserve
Chicago added James Lynch and Jack Sanborn to the active roster and opened with 14 practice-squad signings.

Chicago's initial 53-man roster quickly gave way to another round of decisions. The Bears placed defensive back Coby Bryant and tight end Hayden Large on injured reserve Sept. 1, while signing defensive lineman James Lynch and linebacker Jack Sanborn to the active roster.
Those were changes to different positions, not a pair of direct replacements. Lynch adds to the defensive line and Sanborn to the linebacker group; Bryant's and Large's absences still affect the secondary and tight ends.
The same announcement listed 14 practice-squad signings. They included receivers Kaden Davis, Scotty Miller and JP Richardson; tight end Stephen Carlson; defensive lineman Marcus Davenport; and defensive back Deantre Prince. Keeping players across several positions gives the staff alternatives as weekly availability changes.

Davis became an early example of that flexibility. The Bears elevated him for the Carolina opener Sept. 12, along with quarterback Miller Moss, who joined the practice squad in that later transaction. Moss was not among the 14 players listed Sept. 1.
The distinction matters when reading the roster: an active-roster signing, a practice-squad signing and a temporary game-day elevation serve different purposes. The September moves gave Chicago several ways to respond to injuries without treating its first 53 as a finished product.
