Bears open practice windows for Shemar Turner and Noah Sewell

The two defenders can practice while Chicago evaluates their return; Ozzy Trapilo is also working fully, with game readiness still to be decided.

  • Two Bears defenders took the first step toward returning Wednesday. Chicago opened the 21-day practice windows for defensive lineman Shemar Turner and linebacker Noah Sewell, who began the season on the physically unable to perform list. The move allows both players to practice while coaches assess their readiness. It does not put either player on the active roster or establish a return date.

Head coach Ben Johnson confirmed the windows as Chicago prepared for Monday night's home game against Philadelphia. A to Z Sports also reported that cornerback Kyler Gordon, the team's other PUP player, did not have his practice window opened Wednesday. The difference matters: Turner and Sewell can now take part in team work, while Gordon's return path remains less defined. Johnson offered no timetable for the cornerback in the reporting available Wednesday.

  • Turner and Sewell could eventually add options at two levels of the defense, but the club still has to determine how they respond to practice. Turner, a 2025 second-round pick, had his rookie season cut short by a knee injury. Sewell is returning from an Achilles injury. The practice period gives Chicago time to evaluate their conditioning and workload before any roster decision. It would be premature to describe either as available for the Eagles game.

  • The offensive line has its own gradual return. Left tackle Ozzy Trapilo continued to work without restrictions after becoming a full practice participant last Friday. Johnson said the Bears will keep evaluating Trapilo's team-drill reps and confidence before deciding he is ready for a game. Braxton Jones started Chicago's first two games at left tackle and shared snaps with Theo Benedet against Minnesota. The Bears therefore have an established game-day option while Trapilo builds toward a possible return.

  • The Wednesday updates arrive during a week in which Chicago's quarterback situation is also unsettled. Caleb Williams is week-to-week with a hamstring injury, and the team has not named its starter for Monday. Johnson's first formal injury report for the Eagles game is due Thursday because the Bears play on Monday night. For Turner, Sewell and Trapilo, that report and the next practices will give a clearer picture than the return-to-practice announcement alone.
